 | My name is Simone Gowie-Jerome and I am a Leadership and Management student a the University of Central Florida. I plan to graduate in the spring of 2013 with a Masters of Science in Nursing. I have been a registered nurse since 2002 caring primarily for the adult cardiac patient population. During my tenure I fulfilled many roles including preceptor, charge nurse, mentor and assistant nurse manager. These roles have helped me to succeed in my current position as a Nursing Operations Manger (NOM). As a NOM, I oversee the 24/7 operations of a 24 bed inpatient heart failure unit. My role is to facilitate and remove barriers that prevent optimal patient outcomes. As a leader, I engage my team utilizing shared governance in order to empower them to have a voice in all things that affect their practice. I also provide support, advocacy, mentorship to foster the use of evidenced base practice and professional development. My recent clinical experience with the Chief Nursing Officer of my organization has afforded me the opportunity to gain exposure and network with key stakeholders in the organization and community. As a result I have become a member of a professional organization for nurse executives and I am involved in a number of projects which will positively impact the profession of nursing at my institution. The role of the nurse manager is crucial in elevating clinical nursing practice. My passion for nursing leadership continues to grow each day I have the opportunity to lead.
